Osiris is the student information system, that records all student data, from enrollment right through to graduation. You can use Osiris to view your grades, register for courses and examinations, and to keep track of your progress. If you have more questions you can contact the Education and Student Affairs (ESA) office at the Metaforum/Library or you can contact them by email at [mailto:ESA@tue.nl ESA@tue.nl]

To register for courses in Osiris, you can go to the “Enrol” page. You can access this page by clicking on the left sidebar icon with a pencil. This will take you to a page showing buttons for courses, tests, minor degrees, and showing your current enrolments. By clicking on the “courses” button, you can then enrol for courses by searching for whichever course you are interested in. You will automatically be enrolled for the exam of that course, but not the resit.

If you’re planning to take a resit exam, you will need to enrol for it. To do so, you can click the “tests” button on the enrol page to register for the resit of your choice.

Any courses you register for should appear in your TE TimeEdit personal calendar.

Registration Deadlines
It is important to note the deadlines for course registration, which is usually a month before the coming quartile. You can find the deadlines on the relevant academic agenda for your year. If you have not managed to register for your course before the deadline, you will have to pay an administrative cost of €20 for each course you want to register to after the deadline. More information can be found here.

Elective Courses
Elective courses are courses you take outside the study package of your faculty.
To register for an elective course you first need to have the elective package approved by the Examination Committee. This can be done through the use of PlanApp.

PlanApp
Osiris also has a PlanApp to help you plan your courses during your study period. This tool is very helpful because it shows the timeslots of each course and whether a course will clash with another course you are taking. It also is where you will send in your elective plan to get approved by the examination committee.

For tutorials on how to use PlanApp and submit your elective plan, see TU/e's guide.

Welcome to the Eindhoven Student Wiki.

This website is meant for international students studying in Eindhoven, the Netherlands and especially at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Regardless of whether you are about to start your new life in the Netherlands or have lived here for a while, this wiki contains lots of information and tips that help you survive in the city and at the university.

To navigate on the site, you can use the Contents below or see a list of all pages.

The wiki is managed by the the international student association of TU/e Cosmos, and some others who deserve Special Thanks. Please note that it is under continuous development, so missing and incomplete pages are possible. We are working hard to improve and expand the content.

If you would like to contribute yourself, you can create an account and edit any page you would like. All edits will be approved by an administrator before they are made public to combat spam, but this should happen quickly.

Prospective Students
Application Procedure
The TU/e website explains the procedure for applying to the TU/e. For exchange programs, the general application procedure is explained here. For any other programs, including Bachelor's, Master's, PHD, and PDEng programs, more information can be found here. To find out if you are eligible to apply for the program of your choice at the TU/e and steps you need to take in order to enroll, you can check here.

Before You Arrive
Moving can be scary, especially if it is to a new country. We want to help you adjust to your new life before you arrive.

TU/e International Student Team
The TU/e International Student Team is a Facebook group to connect the international community of the university. You can meet fellow internationals from all departments and study phases, be informed about what is happening at TU/e and ask any specific question that you were unable to find the answer to elsewhere.

If you are a current or prospective TU/e student, or you are helping the international community in some way, you can simply request to join. Please help us identify spam requests by answering the questions shown upon requesting membership.

The group has a few rules to make sure only relevant posts appear in the group, please familiarise yourself with the rules in the description before posting.

Housing
For details on accommodation and housing benefits, go to our housing page.

How to get to Eindhoven from Schiphol
When you arrive in the entry hall at Schiphol airport, you do not need to go far to get to the train station because it is located under the entrance hall. To check out the train schedule, visit NS. For the direct line to Eindhoven, sometimes the exact track is not determined until a few minutes before arrival. The signs on the platforms should be the most immediate and accurate information. You can purchase tickets at the ticket booth in the entry hall or at the ticket kiosk next to baggage claim (it's bright yellow).

When getting a ticket, if it looks like a card, remember to check in by tapping it against a yellow NS pole. It should beep and indicate you are checked in. You will check out in Eindhoven by using the ticket again at the mechanical gates.

How to get to Eindhoven Station from Eindhoven Airport
To get to Eindhoven Station from Eindhoven Airport, you will have to take the bus. To find the bus schedule, visit 9292.

It is important to note that the buses do not run 24/7 so make sure they will be running when your plane arrives. If they are not available, there is a taxi lane in front of the airport.

How to get to TU/e Campus
From Eindhoven Station, it takes roughly 5 minutes to walk from the north side of the station to the entrance of the campus. Signs inside the station will indicate the north side as “noordzijde,” which is in the direction of the buses. Once you leave the train station, the campus should be noticeable towards the east by seeing Vertigo with the TU/e logo on top.

From the Eindhoven ring, it takes 10 minutes at most to bike to the campus.

Your First Days
Your first days in Eindhoven can be a little confusing.

Depending on when you arrive, you might be in Eindhoven just when the Introduction Weeks begin, or slightly before. The Introduction Weeks will take up almost all your time while they are happening, and the university will give you a good overview of when and how to register at city hall, applying for insurance (more on Dutch Health Care, opening a bank account etc). If you are here before introduction weeks, or have free time before classes start, see our page for things to do in Eindhoven or come visit us in the Common Room on the campus! You could also read up on the history of Eindhoven if you find that interesting.

Health Services
The Netherlands most likely has a different way of providing health care than in the country you are coming from. To read more about the Dutch system, you should check Dutch Health Care which includes an explanation of applying for health insurance, and mental health for resources specific to mental health.

Transportation
The easiest way to get around Eindhoven is using bikes. If, for whatever reason, you don't want to travel by bike, public transport is very good in Eindhoven and the rest of the Netherlands. It might also be possible to survive just by walking, but having a public transport card or spare bike is never a bad idea just in case.

Dutch culture and Student life
Click Dutch Culture if you want to know more about this! This page tells more about the student life, how Dutch students are like and what events can be expected. Also Dutch festivals and important days are told on this page. If you also want to know more about learning the Dutch language, the local food and Dutch peoples' personality, this is the page to peek into.

TU/e Campus Area
Want to know more about the TU/e Campus? Click Campus for more information. This page shows the map of the campus, the buildings in the campus, services offered by TU/e and some other Campus related information.

Helpful Websites
There are a variety of websites you will use during your studies. Majority of the websites we have listed are run by the TU/e, however, there are a few government run websites that you will need to use.

TU/e Websites
<ol start="1">
<li>MyTue: MyTue is a portal for all things TU/e, such as links to Osiris, Canvas, Cursor, your schedule, and more! You will not be able to sign into MyTue until you have your student email (password will be the same as the one for your email).</li>
<li>Osiris You can use Osiris to view your grades, register for courses and examinations, and to keep track of your progress</li>
<li>Canvas: A platform where teachers post information about the classes and where you can submit assignments. How this platform is used varies on department and teachers. Can be located via MyTue.</li>
</ol>

Government Websites
Studielink is needed for study enrollment and they provide English language option on their site. Belastingdienst is the Dutch tax office and their pages are only in Dutch. DigiD is your online ID when dealing with government organizations online. You need a BSN number for these sites.

*Studielink
**"Studielink is a national enrolment system for degree-seeking university students in the Netherlands. By way of this system all students can request registration on (most) degree programmes at universities in the Netherlands. For international students (i.e. students with non-Dutch diplomas and/or nationality) registration in Studielink is only one step in the process. The other essential step is submitting an application for admission via the university's online application system. After registering for a study programme in Studielink, you will be provided with a link to the online application system." Source:Studielink
*Belastingdienst
**This is the Dutch tax office, and they collect taxes, custom duties and excise duties in the Netherlands. Belastingdienst is under the Dutch Ministry of Finance and also manages the social allowance payments such as Zorgtoeslag (healthcare benefits, check Dutch Health Care) and Huurtoeslag (housing benefits, check Housing). More information here
*DigiD
**From About DigiD: "If you go to your City Hall or to the counter of a different government organisation, in many cases you will have to prove your identity using your ID card, passport or driving licence. Over the Internet, you can prove your identity by logging in with your DigiD. Government organisations will then know that it really is you they are dealing with."
**How it works: "Say you wish to request an excerpt from the municipal personal records database through your local council's website. You will then automatically be redirected from the local council's website to the DigiD login page. Here you would enter your DigiD username and password. You will then automatically be redirected to the local council's website, where you can request the excerpt." source: About DigiD
** The Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) is the Dutch governmental body responsible for student finance, residence tests, and verification of your (former) diplomas from educational institutions.

Erasmus Card
If you are an Erasmus student, you might want to look into getting an Erasmus card.

Your First Year
Your first year is complete! Now what?

Enrollment to next academic year
Your need to enroll yourself every year that you are continuing with your studies (this also applies when changing major). This is typically done via Studielink. For this you will need your DigiD. You also have to remember to pay for your tuition! Either pay it all at once, or in installments.

First year requirements
On your first year, you will have to gain a minimum amount of ECTS to stay in the TU/e study you have chosen. Once you have passed your first year and you are from EU, you do not have minimum ECTS requirements to stay in your study. For Non-EU students who pass their first year, you have to receive 30 ECTS a year to stay in TU/e. TU/e has planned that you would receive 60 ECTS an academic year.

These regulations might change, so to double check this. It is recommended to ask TU/e for clarification if you have a need for it.

Joining TU/e community
You might have fully focused on your studies during your first year, but your university life can have more in it! You can join some Associations or Cosmos and become part of them. Companies in Netherlands value extracurricular activities, so if you want something extra to your CV, becoming an active member of an associations could be a good idea. You will also get a lot of new friends!

Sports can be fun and SSCE offers an affordable sports card.

Things to Do
For stuff to do in Eindhoven, check out our event calendars and other info at Things to do in Eindhoven.

Personal Development
TU/e and Eindhoven in general offers a lot of opportunities to develop yourself.

There are a lot of student teams in TU/e who develop and build a lot of new interesting technologies.

If you are interested in working besides your studies, read more about Part-time jobs.

TU/e offers Dutch classes for free. In case you are interested in learning Dutch, visit Dutch Classes.
The Dutch public transport works on a check-in-check-out system, which requires you to scan your OV-chipkaart/ticket when getting on and off of the bus, or when entering and exiting the train station.
Tickets can be bought in the station or in the bus with a Dutch debit card, but you will have to pay for the whole train/bus line and not the distance to your destination.
There are two types of OV-chipkaarts, anonymous and personal. Anonymous OV-chipkaarts can be bought in the station and can be useful for people who are staying in the Netherlands for a couple weeks. For longer stays, it is recommended to get a Personal OV-chipkaarts. <br/>
By making your own personal OV-chipkaart, you will be able to buy discounts, such as:
*40% train discount for €50 per year (Highly recommended even if you do not travel much}
*More deals can be found in the NS website.

If you are not using a direct debit service, OV-Chipkaarts need to be refilled to a minimum amount of euro before travelling. The 20 EUR is required as a minimum before you can check in to ride on a train. You can supply your card with money by ordering credit at machines, which are found at train stations, or you can order credit online and “pick up” the credit by checking in at a station. Additionally, there is a small OV-chipkaart station in Metaforum next to the reception desk where you can tap your card and pick up credit. Day tickets give you unlimited train for one day, this can be bought in the NS website or in supermarkets like Albert Hejin or HEMA.

Travel Planning
You can go to 9292.nl or NS (they also have a phone app) to find the schedule of all public transport in the Netherlands. This website/app will show you all you need for your travel such as number of stops or where the closes bus stop is. We highly recommend getting the app from NS, as it will make navigating the train system easier.

Occasionally, there may be maintenance or strikes that occur which disrupt travel to your destination. Whenever possible, keep an alternate route in mind and be aware of upcoming events that may delay your plans. Often, if your train line is blocked for an extended period of time, there will be buses to assist in getting you to your destination. However, buses are slower than trains, so plan ahead of scheduled maintenance!

To be aware of what’s going on with trains, check the “situation on the tracks” from NS.

It’s highly recommended that you also search for a house yourself, as TU/e cannot provide housing to every student with their resources. We recommend you to be in Eindhoven during your search. This will help prevent you from being scammed. Most students choose accommodation either from the TU/e or The Student Hotel for the first year of their stay and look for housing during their first semester or first year of school.

Beware of Scams!
People are not always looking out for your best interests. There are many scammers out there who will gladly take advantage of your inexperience and take money from you for properties that may be illegal or simply do not exist! Be careful to avoid scams. If something looks way too good to be true, it probably is! Treat all advertisements and offers with a degree of skepticism, and read your contracts thoroughly.

Common areas to be scammed are in places like Facebook or unregulated group chats. Other warning signs include paying to non-Dutch bank accounts, images that don’t appear to be of Dutch apartments (such as foreign electrical plugs or mountains outside of windows), avoiding viewings, and more. For more in-depth explanation on avoiding scams and being prepared to rent, please see these helpful documents from TU/e: International Student Housing Toolkit – Eindhoven, Rental checklist

If you do happen to find a scammer, make sure to contact TU/e or the agency you had intended to work with, and provide details about the scammer as best as possible. This way we can help prevent others from getting scammed too!

Tips From Students
After talking with several students, we have come up with a list of tips for you to navigate housing.

*No matter the company, be sure to take pictures of your house/apartment/room when you move in and send a copy to your housing agency when you first arrive. This helps you document any damages that were on the property BEFORE you arrived and can help prove this should issues arise when you move out. You can send these pictures when you return the move-in form (a form given to you at move-in for documenting inventory and damages. Note: This is usually only given when renting from large companies. Check with your landlord during move-in.)

*Many ads are not taken down from sites, although the room or studio has been taken by someone. To minimize the amount of time you would waste with these "false" ads, we suggest calling the agency immediately when you see something you like.

*Since agencies often require you to send them some relevant information about yourself (regarding renting), we suggest you prepare a CV-like PDF to speed up the process. This can go as far as sending a motivational letter too. Similarly, if you are applying to ads in Facebook groups, prepare a short introduction text about yourself that you can send in a personal message.

*The Dutch have a tradition called "kijkavond", which is similar to the open house concept in English. In many shared houses, when a room becomes available the roommates get to decide about who moves in. They do this by selecting a few of the applicants who they think would make good housemates and invite them to see the house - altogether. This evening is called kijkavond, which is practically an informal event involving a short introduction round, and the applicants have a chance to see the room and meet the housemates. If you are invited to a kijkavond, make sure you arrive on time, don't be afraid to ask questions and have conversation with both the housemates and fellow applicants - in general you want to show your most social side, that's what makes a good housemate.

Housing Allowance
There is a possibility you can receive housing allowance (huurtoeslag) while being a student. This can be applied for via Belastingdienst which is the Dutch Tax Office. Dutch tax office pages are in Dutch, but with a Dutch friend or Google Translate they are easy to navigate. The conditions for getting housing allowance (huurtoeslag) vary with age, income and living conditions. All conditions are described on the web page.

Your housing company might offer to arrange housing allowance for you, most likely for a substantial fee. Arranging housing allowance online by yourself is very simple, so it might be worth considering doing it yourself before accepting the offer from your housing company.

Huurcommissie
The Huurcommissie (Rent Committee in English) helps tenants and landlords with any kind of issues regarding renting. For example, if you suspect that your rent is too high or your landlord doesn't do yearly maintenance on the house, you could contact the Huurcommissie for help. Unfortunately, their website is not available in English, therefore we advise to call or email them.

Bank account
If you live in the Netherlands, it is highly recommended that you open a Dutch bank account since the cards you use in your home country might not be accepted in a lot of places.
TU/e provides you with some help about how to open a bank account on their website. To summarize, the procedure for students moving from abroad goes as follows:
<ol>
<li>Register as a resident at the City Hall of Eindhoven. TU/e can help you set this up, but you need to indicate this in the confirmation statement.</li>
<li>Wait until you receive your BSN number (approx. 2 weeks).</li>
<li>Visit a bank to open your account.</li>
</ol>

Regarding which bank to choose, it depends on your preferences.

You might find yourself in the situation that your card from your home country is not accepted and, at the same time, you can't open a bank account yet because your are waiting for your BSN. A temporary solution can be Bunq or Revolut, both of which are mobile-only banks that offer a service where you can open an account and provide your BSN up to 90 days later.
Card and Cash Acceptance
In particular, Eindhoven rarely accepts cash. Signs that say “Hier Allen Pinnen” mean that only card is accepted, and are common nearly everywhere in the city. Even vending machines often only accept contactless payment!

Before arriving, be sure to have a compatible credit or debit card, even if your card is not from a Dutch bank! Maestro and V PAY are known to work well throughout all of the Netherlands, however these brands are no longer going to be issued to new cards as of 1 July, 2023. Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard should work at most locations as well due to the change in card brands. Additionally, debit cards are more likely to be accepted than credit cards. Credit cards do not work very well in the Netherlands! We highly recommend using debit before you get a Dutch debit card.

Places outside of Eindhoven do use cash, such as Maastricht, but it is less prevalent than using a card. In the case that you do need to use cash, note that most shops will not accept banknotes of €100 or more, due to fraud in the past.

Finding housing in Eindhoven is challenging. New students can receive help from the TU/e when coming to the university for the first time, but others will have to search in multiple places to find a good place to live that fits all your needs.

TU/e Housing for New Students
The TU/e helps new international students with finding housing. You should receive some information by email, which includes deadlines etc. More information can be foundhere. This information is for prospective students only.

When you obtain a house, make sure to register at city hall! It’s very important to do so in a timely manner to meet Dutch regulations.

Finding Your Own Housing
It’s highly recommended that you also search for a house yourself, as TU/e cannot provide housing to every student with their resources. We recommend you to be in Eindhoven during your search. This will help prevent you from being scammed. Most students choose accommodation either from the TU/e or The Student Hotel for the first year of their stay and look for housing during their first semester or first year of school.

As many landlords who wish to provide housing to students need proof that you are a student, make sure to be prepared, because the competition is quite high! Have evidence that you are, or going to be, a student at TU/e. A letter of enrollment is the best proof, which can be obtained by emailing esa@tue.nl after you have been enrolled. However, if you wish to start searching as soon as possible, acceptance emails may be allowed by some landlords.

The Social Hub - The Social Hub, previously known as the Student Hotel is a medium-term housing option. Located close to campus, the hotel is a great place to stay if you are planning on looking for housing on your own and need a place to stay while looking. Note that The Social Hub has a maximum stay of 1 year and does not allow for Housing Allowance.

Rental agencies
You are more likely to find cheaper accommodation yourself. Below there is a list of all rental agencies offering housing in Eindhoven. The most popular sites are placed first. Most sites are free of charge, however a few are subscription based meaning you have to pay a little amount of money to be able to reply to their ads.

Additionally, we recommend signing up for Vestide as soon as possible, even before you arrive in the Netherlands. It is based on a waiting system, where those who have accumulated the most waiting time since their sign up date will get the rental agreement out of those who apply to a room. More information about how this waiting system works can be found here.
|-
| Vestide || Vestide is probably the cheapest agency, offering rooms with shared facilities, however it is very unlikely that you get your first room in Eindhoven from them. The reason is that Vestide works with a special waiting list that favours students who have been waiting for a room longer or are moving here from a farther distance. Since they are one of the cheapest agencies, the waiting lists are always full. Nonetheless, if you are planning to stay in Eindhoven for multiple years, you should sign up as soon as possible, so you start accumulating 'months' and you can get to the top of waiting lists in your second year or later. Furthermore they manage the Aurora building on campus, so keep an eye out for openings there!
|-
| Plaza Resident Services || Signing up to view the options available on Plaza Resident Services costs 25 Euro per year. ===Facebook Groups===
There are a variety of resources on Facebook for finding roommates and housing. There are many rooms offered in these groups and although most of them are reliable, be careful because unlike official websites, Facebook cannot guarantee the ads are not scams. Keep in mind: never transfer money before signing a contract and seeing the property. By law you are always allowed to see the property.
This usually has to be done within 5 days after arrival. However, if you are doing it via TU/e, you simply wait for the registration day which they will email you about.
When you are registered, you are provided a BSN number, which is your citizenship number that is needed for all administrative actions in the Netherlands. ==BSN Number==

When you are registered, you are provided a BSN number, which is your citizenship number that is needed for all administrative actions in the Netherlands. This includes opening a bank account, visiting a doctor and getting health insurance (see Dutch Health Care), applying for benefits (Zorgtoeslag, Huistoeslag, and more) and for receiving salary if you are working. As a BSN can be needed in some simple situations, such as telling your GP reception that you have arrived for the appointment, it is handy to have it saved somewhere with easy access (such as your phone).

! Rental Agency !! Further Information
|-
| Vestide || Vestide is probably the cheapest agency, offering rooms with shared facilities, however it is very unlikely that you get your first room in Eindhoven from them. .
|-
Facebook Groups
There are a variety of resources on Facebook for finding roommates and housing. There are many rooms offered in these groups and although most of them are reliable, be careful because unlike official websites, Facebook cannot guarantee the ads are not scams. Keep in mind: never transfer money before signing a contract and seeing the property. By law you are always allowed to see the property.
</ol>

The Dutch word for room is 'kamer'. It is important to know that many Dutch students prefer Dutch roommates. Don't be discouraged or surprised if you see 'Dutch Only' ads, you will eventually find the right accommodation.

Credits to Christoph Hauenstein who collected a list of housing websites, which is what our list is mostly based on.
